The scarlet letter is a novel written by Nathaniel
Hawthorne in the late of 1840s . This novel talks about Hester Prynne who had
to wear a Scarlet Letter “A” as a result
of her adultery and she was imprisoned because of her sin .She gave birth to a baby girl named pearl and she had delivered
this baby when her husband has been away for two full years . Prynne had to
wear this letter and to walk through town in order people can see her and can
see her shame. later on Hester Prynne's
husband arrives in disguise , Once she is back in prison, he shows up and
orders her to keep her mouth shut so he can know who is the person that she had
sinned with and seeking revenge on her lover .Hester's husband tells the
townspeople that he's a physician whose name is Roger Chillingworth. His a smart man, so he
realizes that the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale is the likely father of Hester's
baby. And he moves on to live with Dimmesdale and he was able to see him suffer
spiritually from his guilt because Dimmesdale was not able to confess his sin
in front of others. This situation continues for 7 years.
Finally, Hester realizes that her husband has been
doing some psychological manipulation to the father of her daughter and she tells Dimmesdale about the real
identity of Chillingworth. They plan to run away and to settle in England by creating a new
life together , but Dimmesdale confesses his sin to the townspeople on the
scaffold where Hester was publicly shamed seven years earlier. He goes out with
a bang by ripping his shirt open to reveal the mark on his chest, just before
dying. One year later, Chillingworth dies and leaves all his money and property
to Pearl, which means that pearl and her mom can return to England to build a
new life. After several years Hester
returns to town and she lives back in her cottage and when she dies,
she's buried near the minister, and they share a gravestone marked with the
letter "A."
Indeed It’s a
great Novel in which it makes you hooked to it . When you read this novel you
start to think of people whom you wronged or people in which you judged them
based on their reputation or based on what was spoken of them . As we know
Hester was humiliated in front of the
townspeople because she had committed a certain Sin , But everyone of us has a
deep dark secret ,we are not perfect and we have to learn how to forgive
others. Moreover this novel explains that not everything that shines is gold ! .Dimmesdale
who was a priest was also a sinner, but the townspeople didn’t know this and
they used to cherish priests and to consider them perfect . We should not be
fooled by appearances, we should always give people a second chance This novel
highlights the idea that revenge leads to evilness, when you want to revenge
you will do things that are not right and you will become evil Just as
Chillingworht in which he was seeing how Dimmesdale was suffering day after day
and he still enjoyed seeing him
suffering . This Novel allows you to visualize how Hester was humiliated when
she stood on the platform in front of everyone and how people used to gossip
about her , they didn’t sympathize with the little girl even though she had
nothing to do with it , she was raised alone and she had no friends . A reader
starts to believe if he/she had been there
he she/he would do something to stop what’s happening and to stand on
Hester’s side. No matter what happens in life we should always say the truth
and seek for it .Also This novel highlights the idea that for every action
there will be certain consequence , if we did something wrong we should expect
that we will punished As Hester and Dimmesdale were punished . The novel uses
Hester to represent severe physical punishment where as Dimmesdale represents
the agony of spiritual punishment , So we as readers will be able to analyze
that the spiritual punishment is much more greater than the physical punishment
and no matter what happens the truth will be revealed and we
must not deny the truth .

I liked this novel, as I think that Hester served as a cultural warning to girls and women in general and specifically to that in Renaissance, not to commit adultery, and at the same time the happy ending shows that whatever bad you were, there's always a room for repentance, all you should do is to be patient on how society might view you and not to forgot to return to God.
